Kyle Schwartz, in her TED talk “What Kids Wish Their Teachers Knew”, shares what she learned about her students through a one-sentence writing assignment. How did you feel watching this video? Would you want to give this same assignment to your students? Why or why not? What assignments have you given (or could you give) that have helped you learn more about your students?
Thank you for this book Kim! So many good reminders for us all! Communication is so important in our everyday lives and she did a great job of presenting her material in an encouraging, postitive way! Nice work and thank you, I gained some life skill knowledge!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate this book greatly. It seems that just talking with someone shouldn't be so hard a thing to do, but it is work to have a meaningful, satisfying conversation. Kim Bearden gave me a framework that makes sense to me, is sensitive to others' feelings, while concisely pointing out the main points for having a good conversation. It really puts it out there that being present and in the moment is just so important. I also like that the first two points are about being considerate of others while taking into account motivations. I definitely would recommend this book study.
ReplyDeleteI really loved getting to read this book. I believe everything we did was beneficial to me. I've learned a lot of new things that I can try to implement into my classroom and with my coworkers. I couldn't recommend this book more. I believe everyone would benefit from reading and listening to all the videos you provide for us.
ReplyDeleteThis book was pretty good - I thought about some of my nieces (and my sisters too, when we were teenagers) that had a negative relationship w/their parents & a bad experience at school, due to poor communication and support. I liked the charts and lists and might send them to her (my sister) to see if it would be helpful with raising challenging teens ;)
ReplyDeleteI would recommend this book study - pretty fast/shorter book.
I very much enjoyed this course. While reading this book, I felt like it would have been a great whole staff professional development. I feel as though so many of us struggle with communication and even if we don't, it is a great reminder of how to communicate effectively. I personally struggle with communication and confrontation. I was able to learn a lot of helpful pointers for different situations and I look forward to using these skills to communicate with parents, staff, and students.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the course, and it really made me think about my own communication skills- on how I communicate with students and staff. Communication is a huge component in be able to provide a positive learning environment and positive school culture. I would definitely recommend this book study to my colleagues and there is nothing I would change about the course.
ReplyDeleteI would recommend this book to other colleagues. I like that it focused on communication a lot, because that is something that will always need fine tuning.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading this book. The course did well making thought provoking questions and incorporated outside videos that correlated with the book. I enjoyed using the tools we learned in the book in the post because the more you practice, the more you remember how to do it. I would recommend this book to colleagues.
ReplyDeleteI'd definitely recommend this book/class to a colleague. It's full of real-life scenarios and reminders that help in work, teaching, and family life. I thought the pacing worked well, and the videos fit in nicely, too. It was a worthwhile course, but it wasn't very time consuming. I appreciated it very much!
ReplyDeletePlease post your thoughts about this course below. What did you like about it? What didn’t you like about it? Would you recommend this book study to a colleague?
ReplyDeleteI loved that the author gave real life situations that she was in where she not only assessed herself, but the other speakers/ writers. Im also glad that the video about the 10 ways to improve your communication Ted talk. That was my favorite part about the whole book study. I already have suggested this book study to a few friends looking to renew with useful and applicable information.

ReplyDeleteI really like that this book study made me stop and think about the ways I can get better at listening and taking part in conversations. It allowed me to take the time to think about ways I can get better at supporting students, parents and colleagues. I appreciate the fact that I was able to reflect on the way my responses can effect others around me.
I have one colleague already waiting for the book when I am done. She is going to sign up for the book study towards the end of the school year when she has a little more time.
Thank you for taking the time to create this class!
I really enjoyed this course. I was able to learn so many helpful things to implement in my classroom but other areas in my life too. Speaking truly is an art and it is complex. I loved how this book really broke it down and gave concrete examples.
ReplyDeleteI did not, not like anything about this book study. It was all extremely helpful and engaging.
I will definitely recommend this class to my co-workers. In fact I am actually going to show my Principal and hopefully we can do a PD about this. It is so important and something we as teachers use in every day life.
This has been one of my favorite courses so far. It has really made me stop, think, and reflect on how my communication and listening is in my own life, both at school and at home. I enjoy books where we can reflect and apply strategies to the classroom but also at home. My favorite part of this book study was the videos. There wasn't anything I did not like about the class. I found these super inspiring and influential. I would 100% recommend this book study to colleagues!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate that this book was written in more of a conversational style and was giving suggestions and examples of each topic she talked about. It was a good reminder of how to build a community and ways to improve ourselves in conversations with others.
ReplyDeleteI do wish she could have expressed more on ways to teach our students to use these 6 principles. I feel in this day and age with our technology that we need to teach our students these skills as well and that can be challenging.
I honestly would recommend this book to college students in the education programs and also to first year teachers. This book would have been very helpful when I was in y first couple years of teaching. Yes more accomplished teachers would benefit from this book as well and would recommend it to them as well. Maybe even as a personal development day at schools to help all their teachers improve the schools communication.
I always enjoy the book studies. What I really appreciated in this book was the provided email examples that the author provided. Many times authors/presenters just talk about these ideas and do not provide examples of us to read through and get a better idea on what they are trying to show up. Overall, I enjoy this book.
ReplyDeleteI truly enjoyed this book and course. The book was an easy read which made you think about how you interact with your students, colleagues, parents, etc. I love all the real stories and the examples on how to respond to people. The videos were interesting as well, especially the Amazing Shake National Competition one. I have never seen or heard of such a thing until this book study. There is nothing that i would change about this book study, and I have already recommended it to others.
ReplyDeleteI loved this book study. It made me rethink how I communicate with people. I have a lot to improve on!I would not change a thing for the course.
ReplyDeleteI found this book very helpful and informative. There were lots of times when I was reading that I thought, "Oh yeah, I can do that!" Communication is so important. Thanks for all the reminders and helpful hints. I will recommend this book study. I think the course was wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThis course was wonderful! Not only was the book full of beneficial points, the TED talks, and blog posts were also great. This course made me step back and reflect on my current communication skills and that is what I loved most. We as teachers, communicate all day - every day and it is so important to be communicating clearly - to our students, parents and colleagues. I would most definitely recommend this book study!
ReplyDeleteThis book study really made me self evaluate. I see there are quite a few things I still need to work on but I have known this. I have terrible ADHD and that isn't an excuse but it doesn't help with how scattered I feel. This was a good book and I will be working on my communication as well as my listening skills.
ReplyDeletePlease post your thoughts about this course below. What did you like about it? What didn’t you like about it? Would you recommend this book study to a colleague?
ReplyDeleteI think what I liked most about this book is the actual immediate usefulness of it's content. The book contains simple (yet complex) communication skills that every teacher can utilize and benefit from. Conversations & communication with students & parents can be tricky and this book gives incredibly good guidelines to follow and use. I really have no dislikes about this book.
I would highly recommend this book to a colleague & also as useful/relevant in-service material.
Simply amazing are my first thoughts! I have done many of these book studies, and this one is at the top of my list, since it is so useful and practical!! I really wish that she could come into our school and talk to the administrators, as well as ALL of the teachers. There were many "golden nuggets" in her book to use throughout the school year, while communicating with others. It really does help me to self-reflect and re-evaluate how I communicate throughout my day; what I do well and what I need to be intentional about to do better. I really liked that she mentioned that her school talked to parents as to how to best communicate with teachers as well. Again, we need to allow each other grace and kindness. This will definitely be a book that I will tab many pages of and reference often. -Thank you, again, for another outstanding book selection! :-)
ReplyDeleteThese courses were so organized and interesting as well as easy to follow on. It helped to have a checklist of everything needed to be completed as well as not feeling rushed to do so as our work days can get chaotic and we could easily forget to do one thing here and there. It's helpful to hear others' feedback and to get different perspectives from other educators as it's great to learn from everyone who has such different walks of life and experiences. Having the videos to watch each section was interesting as it added another layer to dive deeper into the context of the book which further enhanced my understanding about the importance of how we can communicate and continually better ourselves as educators. I highly recommend this course and thank you for creating an organized and interesting instructional guide to this book!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this book study. I think it’s really important for people to be able to communicate well with each other. I loved how Kim played out the 6 different principles and then followed through with ways of implementing the principles in daily life. I appreciated the example emails in the last section and thought the prompts were a good addition too.
ReplyDeleteThe chapter summaries seemed repetitive to me especially when some of the chapters weren’t that long. But those chapter summaries will make great references in the future.
I would definitely recommend this book to my colleagues.
I really enjoyed this book study. I listened to the book on Audible and it really felt like I was having a conversation with the author. She made it easy to follow and applicable. I liked how she had a real life situation to follow up any point she was making. I enjoyed the end of the book that went through the examples of what we want to say as teachers. This was so relatable! I liked how she said they sent out the parent correspondence so even they knew what the expectations were as far as communication. I liked the blog post assignment where we had to apply the principles to write a letter back to a parent. I would like to have done more of those scenarios. I would definitely recommend this book study!
ReplyDeleteKim Bearden's book was excellent. The communication skills suggested in her book, Talk to Me, were very instructive and generated some reflective insight to how we all communicate. I would suggest this book study to all school faculties, administrators, and staffs.
ReplyDeleteGreat study book, tons of valuable information that is relevant to teachers today and in the future. I enjoyed the book study and will pass this book on to my coworkers. Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteI thought the book was good and had a lot of good and encouraging was to make communication better. I also thought the TED talks/ video your shared were very informational. I would recommend this book/class.
ReplyDeleteI liked that this course provided opportunities to reflect on my teaching practices and encouraged me to think about my interactions with others and how they can be improved. I also enjoyed the TED Talks paired with each chapter, which made the concepts more engaging and relatable. I would definitely recommend this book study to a colleague.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this course because I am continually learning to better my communication skills. The Ted talks help to reinforce the concept and futhered my understanding of the chapter. I would recommend this book study because everyone can learn something from it. The book study was easy to follow.
ReplyDeletePlease post your thoughts about this course below. What did you like about it? What didn’t you like about it? Would you recommend this book study to a colleague?
ReplyDeleteI would certainly recommend this book study to a colleague, I already did! I feel like this book is very relatable to times now. Student's and adults do not communicate like we did in the past. It is important to have tools to help with communication. I really enjoyed the TED talks, and learned a lot from those as well. Thank you for providing interesting and valuable information.
Overall I thought it was helpful for life in general. Communication and validating people's feelings is something I've heard about in several courses over the past few years. I REALLY enjoyed most of the TED talks for sure. The thing I'm maybe disappointed a little bit in, is the ability to relate to young students more. It felt like it was geared toward middle/high school students and adults mainly. Definitely some good points I can apply to my own kids at home, but they are pretty young.
ReplyDeleteAnother great read for educators! This book has a lot of great reminders and helpful reminders. The TED talks were also interesting as well as helpful! I will definitely recommend this book to others!
ReplyDeleteI really liked the blogs. They gave great advise and things to do in my class to be a better teacher.
ReplyDeleteThis was a great book! It was a great reminder not just as a professional, but as a human being as well. We all have feelings and react certain ways and being aware of those responses can greatly affect the course of the conversation. The TED talks were awesome! Communication is tough for the little's but starting simple and small with those conversations can help with the success of all kids!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the blogs and learning how other teachers handle these different situations. I thought the class layout was set up very well and was easy to navigagte.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the class and the book was amazing. So many wonderful reminders to help us be our best in the classroom and beyond. The layout was easy to navigate and the questions were thought provoking.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this book study. I felt that the book contained many great reminders on how to be an effective communicator and the discussion questions were thoughtful and helped me to reflect on the reading. I would recommend this book to colleagues.
ReplyDeletePlease post your thoughts about this course below. What did you like about it? What didn’t you like about it? Would you recommend this book study to a colleague?
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for providing this excellent book study. The book, TED talks, and discussions were great learning tools. I learned valuable strategies for improving my communication and building relationships that I can immediately apply to my work with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators. I loved that I could work through this book study at my own pace and that the materials was organized in such a way that it was easy to navigate what was expected. There was nothing that I did not like about this book study. Therefore, I plan to recommend this book and book study to my colleagues. Thank you!
